Real life skill training is what makes eve shine and appeal to older players, if they could apply something like in a PVPesque/PVEish game with hobbits, elves and the like I would pay Year Long subscriptions to it like I do with EVE. Like Neil Gaiman said, ADULTS need fantasy too :/
Skill training in real time helps people with busy schedules, work, families. You leave a skill up as you work and return "stronger" then on your free time you can dedicate yourself to explore the universe. This concept is amazing. More people should learn from it in the MMO industry. It's not perfect but it's fresh and liberating. I hate the GRIND :/
You got to realize what a profitable business MMO's are.
You could put out almost anything, and gain a few thousand subscribers.
There is no variance from the class/level system because it works and people keep buying it.
If you see MMORPG's as primarily a business, you will only use the class/level system because its guaranteed to return a profit, thus there is no incentive for creativity.
And secondly I am not sure that MMORPG's are necessary in the long term, because if you've played one you've played them all.
In the future I think we will see more "virtual world" type MMO's with no levels, just a blank sheet of parchment to create your own thing, such as Second Life and Eve.
I think traditional class/level "amusement park" type MMO's are on the decline as people get sick of WoW.
Seriously. I've already played EQ and WoW.
If they come out with a brand new MMO what would make me play it?
As someone said "I think we already saw this movie" Its just gonna be another EQ/WoW so what would make me play one more traditional class/level MMO?
Replace Frogloks with Murlocs, replace Swords with Lightsabers, and what do you have? The exact same game with different artwork.
So they try different things like Auto Assault, but thats just silly.
WoW in cars, WoW in spaceships, WoW in boats.
Gimme a break. I have no desire to play 50,000 variants of the same video game.
What differentiates Eve is that its a "virtual world" type sandbox MMO.
I'm 34 years old, I'm not interested in killing Frogloks for XP anymore.
What interests me is virtual business, having real meaningful human interaction, alliance politics, playing the market, and putting economic theory to the test.
Because of Eve now I read the Wall Street Journal and interested in economic theories of Keynes, Marx, Lenin and Friedman.
My time in Eve is not a waste of time because it helps me in RL.
So why should I play EQ? To kill NPC's? What a hollow waste of time.
Are you 34 years old and afraid of paragraphs? --------
